A Memorable Visit: Welcoming Australia’s Governor-General to Cape Weligama
Cape Weligama had the distinct honour of welcoming Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, on her historic visit to Sri Lanka, the first by an Australian Governor-General. While the occasion itself was momentous, it was the depth of Her Excellency’s compassion, authenticity, and connection to people that truly made it unforgettable.
From the moment she arrived, Her Excellency’s warmth and openness shone through. Known for her steadfast commitment to kindness, respect, and care as fundamental Australian values, she embodies these principles not only in words but in her actions. Her involvement in community-focused initiatives, including her support for Sri Lankan-born Shaun Christie David’s Plate It Forward and Colombo Social projects, reflects a humility and generosity of spirit that transcends borders.
Her connection to Sri Lanka runs deep. In 2005, in the wake of the devastating tsunami, she brought her family here to stand in solidarity with a nation whose tourism aspirations had been temporarily halted. That visit was not part of an official programme, but a gesture of genuine empathy and understanding that left a lasting impression.
The afternoon at Cape Weligama was an opportunity to showcase the essence of Sri Lanka’s hospitality, a vibrant blend of culture, warmth and professionalism. From the graceful rhythms of a Kandyan dance welcome to the bright smiles of children from the MJF Centre, every moment reflected the spirit and heart of our island. The enthusiasm of Resplendent Academy students further highlighted the bright future of hospitality in Sri Lanka.
The visit concluded with a symbolic tree planting, a gesture that will grow over the years as a living reminder of this occasion and as a testament to shared commitments towards sustainability, community, and a better future.
Her Excellency stands out as a leader defined by sincerity, vision, and unwavering belief in the potential of people. Her visit was not just a diplomatic milestone; it was a celebration of shared values, mutual respect and the enduring bonds between Australia and Sri Lanka.
