A family business serving humanity through kindness to People & Nature

Resplendent Ceylon is part of the Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company. Dilmah is a family business, established by its Founder Merrill J. Fernando, with the philosophy that business must also be a matter of human service. Kindness to people and nature forms the heart of all that we do.

In 1985, we set out to make the world a better tea. That’s why we grow our own, unlike other tea companies, then pick the best leaves by hand, not machine, and pack it super-fresh right here in Sri Lanka. But it’s not just the taste that makes our tea better, 15% of our profit goes to humanity through the work of the MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation.

Resplendent Ceylon resorts are located in scenic and environmentally sensitive areas. Our sustainability agenda across Climate Action, Land & Sea and People & Culture is our way of honouring our privilege as stewards of these pristine locations.

MJF Charitable Foundation

Business is a Matter of Human Service

The Merrill J. Fernando Foundation was formed to fulfil our Founder’s desire to make his business a matter of human service. One of the region’s largest private charitable Foundations, it focuses on directly, efficiently and effectively delivering transformational impact to less fortunate communities, differently abled children and youth, while empowering women, youth and men with dignity through free education, vocational training, entrepreneurship, nutrition, provision of medical infrastructure. It also cares for the elderly and fosters advocacy. Together with Dilmah Conservation the MJF Foundation connects with our belief that success is a blessing that must be shared. Merrill J. Fernando disrupted a tea industry that was captive to a colonial economic system. He devoted his life to tea, and overcame the obstacles to realising his dream of a genuinely ethical tea, with faith in God and His Grace. A minimum 15% of the pre-tax profits of Dilmah Tea, Resplendent Ceylon and our other businesses funds the work of the Foundation. www.mjffoundation.org

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Dilmah Conservation began its work in 2007 as an important element in the Fernando family’s commitment to making our business a matter of human service. It was by then so clearly evident that human welfare and the environment were inextricably and critically intertwined. We operate the first private sector climate research station.

Ceylon Tea Trails

Ceylon Tea Trails consists of five bungalows perched above the Castlereagh Lake, a key watershed for Sri Lanka’s Western Province. Nestled amidst pristine tea plantations, a population of about 20 identified leopards, as well as other species including endemics, roam in the forest patches in and around the bungalows. Our work here includes the initiation of the Peak Ridge Forest Corridor to protect the leopard population, empowering workers on the tea estates and supporting their families, creation of model montane forests and more.

Cape Weligama

Cape Weligama is an oceanfront resort on Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast. The local community is heavily dependent on fisheries and marine-based tourism activities for their livelihood. The MJF Foundation Community Centre, next to Cape Weligama, focuses on empowering the community through education, training, vocational programs and more. There is also an emphasis on growing our own produce at the resort, creating hyperlocal supply chains and prevention of marine plastic pollution by creating value from plastic waste.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Wild Coast Tented Lodge stands amidst the wilderness contiguous with the Yala National Park. This region is home to several different species, such as leopard, elephant, sloth bear and more. Wild Coast Lodge’s on-site desalination plant together with accompanying reverse osmosis ensures that water is pumped into on-site ponds which provide wild animals respite during the dry seasons. The resort’s keystone project is the Leopard Research and Climate Change Centre, which is set to open in 2023, while there is ongoing activity to ensure an ethical wildlife experience in the Yala National Park, under the stewardship of our rangers.
