A Seasonal Surf Guide to Sri Lanka’s South Coast from Tropicsurf’s Experts
From May to September, Weligama Bay offers a quieter season, with a relaxed rhythm in the water and a more personal surfing experience.
At Cape Weligama, surfing follows the rhythm of the ocean, with each season offering a different experience in the water. With guidance from Tropicsurf, guests are matched daily to the conditions that best suit their level and style.
From October to April, the south coast enters its main surf season. Conditions are at their most consistent- clean, regular swells that deliver reliable rides. However, It’s also the busiest period.
From May to September, the surf changes but does not stop , the pace softens and the experience becomes more relaxed.

“Weligama Bay comes into its own, with a sheltered bay that produces gentle, forgiving waves- ideal for beginners and those building confidence. It’s a quieter time overall, with a slower rhythm and a more personal feel in the water.
The best conditions are typically found in the early mornings and late afternoons, when the ocean is at its calmest, before the winds.”
– Kyle, Tropicsurf Instructor
This season also brings passing rain and wind, which keep the coastline lush and the beaches uncrowded.
With Tropicsurf, instructors read the conditions each day and guide guests to the right spots at the right time, making every session simple, safe, and rewarding, whatever the season.
