On the 14th of August, we spent the day at the MJF Centre in Weligama with 35 women from the Women’s Development Programme for a hands-on soap-making workshop, a day dedicated to building practical skills and exploring new entrepreneurial possibilities.

Community engagement is at the heart of what we do at Resplendent Ceylon, and this workshop was a chance to bring that commitment to life in a very tangible way. Rather than a one-off demonstration, the day was designed as a genuine skills-building session, giving each participant the knowledge and confidence to start making soap on her own.

Learning the Craft, Step by Step

The workshop was facilitated by Ravihari from Mineral Earth, one of our valued retail partners whose beautiful, locally made products are available across all three of our boutique shops. Drawing on years of expertise, the session walked participants through every stage of the soap-making process, from recipes and production methods to safe chemical handling, cutting, curing, and packaging.

The focus was on creating smaller soaps suitable for hotel amenities, a practical, in-demand product with a clear route to market, and a natural fit for the skills being taught.

Turning Skills Into Opportunity

Learning a craft is one thing; having the means to practise it is another. To help bridge that gap, we provided four hand blenders to the group giving the women the basic equipment they need to begin exploring soap-making as a genuine source of income.

Our hope is that this workshop marks the beginning of something lasting: that the women who took part will go on to build their own small ventures, turning a new skill into sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

For us, there’s also a longer-term vision at play. We’re excited by the possibility of one day sourcing our resort amenities directly from this community, closing the loop between the skills we help nurture today and the products our guests experience tomorrow.

It was a day full of energy, hands-on learning, and quiet determination and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes the women of the Women’s Development Programme next.
